a few snaps from the last few weeks

Trying to shoot everything everyday again. Not sure why I haven't been as motivated as I was in the last few months before I moved to LA. Might be the amount of assisting I've been doing or just getting settled in general. I feel the itch again so hopefully a lot of new stuff in the new year, a few cool projects in the works and a website update.

SX-70

Kate and I went hunting for a posing stool for the our loft at the famous Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena. I didn't find a stool but a pretty cool old wooden box which you'll see in a post in the near future. The other find, which I was a bit hesitant to get at first, was an old SX-70 Polaroid camera. I had heard that The Impossible Project was going to be making film for the SX-70 again and it was in really good shape. Kate helped talk me into getting it as well which I am so stoked we did. I ordered some expired film just to make sure the thing worked because The Impossible Project isn't supposed to be producing anything for another few months. We figured the worst case scenario was that it was broken and would just look cool on our shelf, but it does work! So here are our first two pictures.

Morgan

So the two year anniversary of this blog has just passed. I planned on doing something cool for it but things are still a bit crazy here with assisting and getting my head straight with shooting on a frequent basis again. I'm looking forward to some things that are in the works shooting wise. In the mean time I've started doing some "test" with a model agency here in LA called PhotoGenics thank you to those of you who hooked that up. I am approaching them more as portraits and I'd like to keep that vibe with them.

This is the first one I've done. Just shot another girl today but had hair and makeup.

Still settling...

We've been in LA for around 6 weeks and its been an interesting ride so far. I've been concentrating mostly on assisting to make sure I get some steady income and to establish myself a bit here within the assisting world. Things have been great in that realm. Been working again with Ben Watts, he's NY based but is out here a ton.Kevin Zacher, an LA based photographer whom I had worked with in NYC a few times over the last few years and Norman Jean Roy, whom I had never worked with before moving here. All are great photographers and I'm stoked to be working with all of them. I have a few others that I've been in contact with but I don't want to mention any names so not to jinx it.

My own photography has been slowed up a bit due to the move but I hope that my picture taking will pick up a bit in the next month or so. The loft we are renting has some amazing light so I'm going to start shooting portraits up here a bunch and then I'm thinking of hitting the road once a month to find people to photograph. I'm really excited to explore this part of the country.

Here are a few pictures from the past few weeks.

The light in the loft is amazing, I'm really excited to get some V-flats up here so I can shape the light more.

Landscapes from the road

After driving 8 days and 3,721 miles I had one of the best experiences of my life. Just me, my wife, my dog and the road. Next time we do a trip like this we have to take double the time, spending a free day in every place we stop, but I think even if you spend weeks on a trip like this you would always wish you had more time.

So here's the last group of pictures from our move/road trip from the east coast to the west coast. Most of the photos I made were landscapes and I am really happy with a few of them. I've also glad to have sit on these the longest because I needed to edit them down a bit. I'd like to make a good edit of all the photos from the trip and work them into some kind of series. Maybe I'll come back to them in a few weeks to re-edit and do some final retouching to them. Thanks to everyone on all the feedback from the other posting.

Portraits from the road

Here are some of the people we encountered on the road. Only Dylan and Elaine are are people that I knew, the rest strangers. Mostly people were really cool with me shooting them.

We stayed at Dyland and Elaine's the night after we left NY. They got this massive house in Pittsburgh that they are doing all of the renovations themselves. They have a blog about the progress here. Dylan is an amazing photographer, you can see his work here and Elaine is an amazing writer, see her work here.

Editing down my pictures from the road trip has been tough so I decided to break them down into sections. Here several of my wife Kate. Timing is perfect of a post of my favorite person to photograph, its our 2nd anniversary on Tuesday the 8th of Sept.
